Maiden Edition
In my more that two decades of studying leadership and training leaders, I have come to this conclusion that leadership is the vehicle for change and development. Our society stands or falls on a leader. One of Nigeria’s literary giants has said the problem with Nigeria is leadership. It is so, not for Nigeria alone but for any other nation or indeed any group of people. The essential nature of leadership is in the fact that anywhere there is a collection of people; the need for leadership is established. Simply put, leadership becomes inevitable whenever there is a community of people.
Community? This is one word that will feature prominently in this broadcast. There are many facets of a community. In geographical term, a community is a group of people living in a particular local area. This could be your neighbourhood, your ward, your local government area, state or nation. In ethnic, cultural or religious term, it is a group of people having common ethnic or cultural or religious characteristics. For this reason a church is a community; and so is every group that gathers around a common body of beliefs. For this same reason, the Tivis in Benue state are a community. In economic and social terms, a community is also formed anywhere there is common ownership as in business organization where there is joint ownership of assets or family where assets and children are commonly held by husband and wife. The political dimension of community is found in political parties or political pressure groups with a common purpose of wresting power or pushing political ideas or beliefs into the public domain.
It is obvious each of us lives in a community at any time. None of us is truly alone and none of us can survive alone. Our destinies are tied together. Our future lies together.
Imagine that each of us was born into a community of father, mother and a host of uncles, aunties and cousins. Our social environment also included our neighbours and spread to our city and state. We derived our nationality from our parents or our country of birth. Soon our community expanded to include school, religious group and invariably a workplace. In time, we sought for social community in marriage. We may even belong to a political group and choose a political community.
We may move from one community to another within the same day. And the community to which we belong is in a constant flux of change. But the need for leadership remains. For every community derives its existence from the commonly shared values of the group; and every community grows when their commonly shared goals are identified and pursued. Now, the questions arise: Who helps a community identify its goals that are consistent with its aspirations? Who helps to steer its ship along these commonly shared goals? The questions may be many, but the answer is the same – A leader. The truth is: every community needs a leader. And that is the rationale for Leading Right – A refreshing radio programme that advances leadership skills for the transformation of our society.
Please stay tuned Monday to Friday at this time and on this station for Leading Right.
Together, we can make the difference to our community.
